Starlink vs Fiber in Uganda: Which Should You Choose?

The question we hear most from customers in Uganda is simple: should I get Starlink or fiber? The honest answer is that they're good at different things, and choosing well depends on where you are and how you use the internet.

Where you are decides half of it

Fiber only exists where cables have been laid — in Uganda that means parts of Kampala, Entebbe, Wakiso, Mukono, Jinja, Mbale, Mbarara, and Gulu. If your home or office is outside those footprints, the decision is made for you: Starlink works anywhere in Uganda with a clear view of the sky, from a Kampala rooftop to a farm in Kisoro.

Speed and feel

Both are fast enough for streaming, video calls, and remote work. Fiber's advantage is consistency — a good fiber line delivers the same speed at 8pm as 8am, with very low latency, because your cable is yours. Starlink typically delivers 50–200 Mbps with latency low enough for video calls and most gaming; performance can dip briefly in heavy storms and at peak times, though modern kits handle Ugandan weather well.

Power and resilience

Here Starlink has a quiet advantage upcountry: it depends on nothing but your own power. A fiber line can be cut by road works kilometres away; a Starlink dish on a solar-and-battery setup keeps working through blackouts and outages elsewhere. Businesses that can't afford downtime increasingly take both — fiber as the daily driver, Starlink as automatic failover.

Cost structure

Fiber usually means a modest installation fee and a monthly subscription tied to speed. Starlink means buying the kit upfront (a bigger day-one cost), then a monthly service plan. Over a year or two the totals often land closer than people expect. Prices change with promotions, so ask us for current numbers rather than trusting any article's figures — including this one.

The short version

Inside a fiber zone with reliable needs and a tight monthly budget: fiber. Anywhere else, or anywhere power and cable cuts are a worry: Starlink. Business that truly cannot go offline: both, with failover. Tell us your situation and we'll recommend honestly — we sell both, so we have no reason to push one.
