Running Starlink on Solar Power in Uganda: A Practical Guide

Half of the Starlink installations we do in Uganda are beyond reliable grid power — farms, lodges, schools, field sites. The good news: Starlink and solar are a natural pair. Here's what actually matters.

How much power does Starlink use?

A Standard kit typically draws around 50–75W while active — roughly like a laptop and a bright bulb together. The Starlink Mini uses far less, often 25–40W, which is why it's become the darling of field teams. Over a full day, a Standard kit consumes roughly 1.2–1.8 kWh.

What a solid solar setup looks like

For round-the-clock internet, we usually size systems around three components: panels of about 400–600W to harvest enough even on cloudy days, a lithium battery of 2–3 kWh usable capacity to carry the dish through the night, and a quality inverter or DC solution to feed the kit cleanly. Undersizing the battery is the classic mistake — the system works beautifully for a week, then a string of cloudy days kills the internet at 4am.

Mistakes we see (and fix)

Cheap inverters whose dirty power damages equipment; batteries shared with heavy appliances like irons and freezers that flatten them by midnight; panels mounted flat, collecting dust and losing harvest; and no surge protection in areas with fierce lightning seasons. Every one of these is avoidable with a proper design.

Running only in business hours?

If you only need internet during the day — a shop, a station office — you can go smaller: the dish drinks directly from solar while the sun shines, with a modest battery buffer. That cuts system cost significantly.
